1979 Macho T/A #53

Owner: Ken O.

Ken bought this one really recently. 1979 #53 is a factory 400 W72 / 4-speed with the original numbers matching driveline, painted in a Cameo White/Carmine Red combo. However, the interior is a 1981 Turbo Trans Am Pace Car Recaro interior, front and rear, plus the door cards too. 1979 #53 needs a little bit of tidying up, but isn’t too shabby for having 110,370 miles on the clock when Ken picked it up! Ken is enjoying taking it to local car shows around Chattanooga, TN.

1979 Macho T/A #54

Owner: Larry G.

A few decades back, a guy called Scott H. had spotted 1979 #54 and had taken some photos and spoken to the owner, Larry. He explained that 1979 #54 was an untouched, all original W72 400 / 4-speed car with 31,000 miles on the clock, and that Larry had owned the car since 1981. Hopefully Larry reaches out to us with an update on the car!

1979 Macho T/A #56

Owner: Trevor S.

It looks like Trevor S. picked up 1979 #56 back in around 2022, and it appears to be an absolutely immaculate Solar Gold/Heritage Brown on deluxe Camel Tan Hobnail cloth interior. It’s also a factory 400 W72 / 4-speed, and appears to have the original driveline. He bought it off the previous owner of the last few years who resided in Georgia. This one is in such nice original condition that it still retains the factory AM/FM Stereo from factory.

1979 Macho T/A #58

Owner: La Fontaine Classic Cars

We’ve got some cool background on 1979 #58, and just as I was writing this entry in on the site, it literally just popped up for sale at La Fontaine Classic Cars in Milford, MI! 1979 #58 is a unique combo of Solar Gold / Starlight black on deluxe Camel Tan Hobnail cloth interior, but the seats look to have been re-trimmed in a different material back in the 90’s. However, this is not the original combination, as it was originally Solar Gold with Heritage Brown stripes. It was on eBay back in 2018 with a different 160MPH odometer in it, RM Auctions a couple years later, and it looks like it had gone into a collection since then. Here’s some cool background from one of the previous owners, Bill H. who owned the car from 1991 to 1995. He bought it from his cousin who ran an auto shop in Erie, PA that restored and customized cars. Bill was only 16 t the time he owned the car! His cousin was the one who painted on the custom decals in the 90’s that are seen on the hood. When his cousin was done working on the car, he had the T/A trailered down to Chattanooga, TN where Bill was attending high school. Bill wasn’t afraid to drive it like it should be driven, and recounts that he had absolutely flogged the T/A around town, and quotes: “I look back on those days and shudder. I didn't know what I was doing. It's a miracle I didn't wreck it.” Good onya Bill, that’s the way to do it! He used and abused the Macho, as he was working part-time at a fast food joint, when things would break and custom rare parts would fail, he’d have a hard time replacing them, and often resort to using stock parts to get it back on the road. At one point, the Hooker Headers eventually gave up, and he had just replaced them with standard cast iron manifolds. In 1994, Bill went to college and had left the T/A broken down at his mother’s home in Memphis, TN. His mother’s co-worker knew what the car was, and managed to score the non-running Macho for an extremely cheap price. It was that cheap, that after he had got the T/A back up and running, he had made his money back and then some at a local race a couple of weeks later! Bill had never heard about the car after that until he had seen photos of it on the internet in the early 2000’s, and recounts that “that was my brief moment of ignorant bliss with this beautiful car. From Erie, PA - driven in Chattanooga, TN - sold in Memphis, TN. It was my first car, and no car since has ever brought me as much joy.” That’s exactly what we like to hear, and hopefully the new owner can enjoy it the same way, just hopefully not as rough on it this time around!

1979 Macho T/A #60

Last Reported Owner: Kirk M.

1979 #60 has some good reports of it made in the early 2000’s, where it was reported that the car was repainted in 1985 by Mecham, possibly under warranty, where the hood decal was removed, and instead replaced with the full length stripe on the hood. In 1997, the interior was restored with new seat covers and carpet. 1979 #60 has Atlantis Blue / Cameo White paint with the very rare 12N/24X deluxe vinyl blue and oyster two-tone interior, powered by a L80 403 Oldsmobile V8 and TH350 3-speed automatic. In May 2008, the last reported owner Kirk M. from Far Hills, New Jersey bought 1979 #60, and recounts how the first day he had owned the car, he had it parked in front of an exotic car dealership with a Porsche Turbo, a Ferrari Testarossa, and a Lamborghini Miura on display. A young lady had inspected all the cars and out of all of them, elected to ask if the Macho was for sale! Kirk was familiar with the Macho T/A’s as back in 1980-83, he had owned a Solar Gold 1978 Macho T/A while he was in college in Arizona. He doesn’t recall the number of it, but recalls how much fun he had with his friends back in college had with the car.

1979 Macho T/A #65

Owner: Chris J.

Donny J. had spotted 1979 #65 in Indiana sitting in the owner’s front yard back in the very late 90’s, and was able to buy it for $2,000 back in 2000. Apparently it was still titled to Todd C, who was a big Macho collector at the time. Don had owned the car for over two decades and drove it around for many years, based on some photos in particular, it looks like he had an especially good time with it! After a while he had parked it up in the barn, and had recently sold it. The buyer then had sold the car to Chris J, who now currently has it for sale on FB Marketplace in Illinois. 1979 #65 is a numbers matching L80 403 Oldsmobile / TH350 3-speed automatic Cameo White / Solar Gold on deluxe Camel Tan Hobnail cloth interior Macho with original paint. At the moment, it’s in a bit of a rough state needing a little bit of restoration. The buyer who pulled it out of Donny’s barn where it sat tucked away next to a 1980 Y85 Pace Car and a 1979 Y89 TATA freshened it up a little bit, put some new tyres on it and got it running, and not much else has been done since.

1979 Macho T/A #66

Owner: Gary D.

Gary D. found #66 in a backyard in Arizona back in around 2017. The previous owner bought the car with all original documentation in late 2017, so Gary scooped it up pretty quickly after this “MachoAz” guy picked it up off Craigslist. It’s a good thing he did, as this Macho T/A came with every shred of original documentation from the original owner who ordered the car. It has a very unique black, white and tan color combo powered by a L80 403 Olds and a special order factory 3.23 gear ratio. It’s interestingly rare, as 3.23 was only available as a option for 1979 403 T/A’s and Formulas that both had the WS6 Performance Package, and no A/C.

1979 Macho T/A #69

Last Reported Owner: Henry?

I spotted a comment on FB that Rob B. had left on a post about a Macho where he had posted a photo of this Polaroid phot and mentioned he used to own 1979 #69. I reached out to him for more information, and I’m sure glad I did as he shared these awesome Polaroids and some history! Rob bought the car off a private owner back from Phoenix, AZ in 1986. He recalled that the previous owner had removed the numbered plaque on the console, and when he took it to the Firebird raceway outside of Phoenix one day, he also recalled getting a ~12 sec quarter mile time! Rob was an Army Ranger, and when he was stationed to Savannah, GA in 1987, the Macho followed along with him. Rob sold the Macho to another guy in the Army with him on base in Savannah back in 1989 called Henry, but he can’t remember anymore details about the guy just yet. Thanks for sending these in Rob!

Actually, a bit of a depressing follow up I just found after writing this, on a eBay listing recycler site, I saw the old listing for Barry’s Solar Gold 1980 Macho Turbo that was for sale in Front Royal, Virginia at the time, and in the description, I noticed this: “Also included is an MP emblem that came from 1979 Macho #69 - car had been totaled.”. After seeing the photo’s of 1979 #69, I can see the little MP badge they might be referring to. I hope that wasn’t the end for one of the nicest looking 1979 Machos photographed. I’ll try get in contact with the folks who sold Barry the Gold Turbo to find out more.

1979 Macho T/A #71

Owner: Debbie L.

It was great to see that the same Debbie who found the back in 2004 still has 1979 #71 to this day, and did an excellent job of saving the car! Debbie had got 1979 #71 back in the early 2000’s from a friend who had owned a tow yard in Vallejo, Ca. The guy who owned the tow yard had picked up #71 in 2000, hard to believe someone had just let the car get impounded now! He had to close down the tow yard back in 2003, and had over 150 cars he needed to dispose of, and plenty of those ended up in the crusher. About 60 of those cars got taken to his private farm back in Santa Rosa, California. After 5 years of busting the guy’s chops, Debbie thankfully managed to buy 1979 #71 off him, and had the car authenticated by Dennis Mecham. Debbie has done an excellent job of restoring this Macho, and Dennis had given her some history behind the car. It was ordered by a lawyer in California who picked out the color combo and options, and a friend of the lawyer liked the car so much, he sold it to his friend, and then ordered another black and blue Macho! She has provided us with some great current photos alongside some other T/A’s she had owned in the past. Thanks Debbie, we’re glad you’re still driving #71!

1979 Macho T/A #77

Owner: Benson?

I actually had spotted this one on marketplace in Kayenta, Az for $2,000 when it was listed years back, and was trying to message the seller for information, but that was like pulling teeth. The seller wasn’t very responsive, and it was marked as sold a month or so later. Spewing. At least the seller mentioned that he wouldn’t part the car out, so hopefully it made it to someone who would restore the car, as he haven’t heard from this Macho since. It looked to have the original L80 403 Oldsmobile, and the interior was apparently rough. The car was very beat up, with half the body of the car seemingly being replaced with parts from a 1979 Redbird Esprit.

1979 Macho T/A #80

Owner: Jim Y.

Jim Y. had found 1979 #80 in a rough state, left for dead out in California, but has rescued this one and has commenced a restoration on it. This was one of the Benson Pontiac batch, and features Recaro seats from DKM.

1979 Macho T/A #81

Owner: Glen D.

Gary used to own 1979 #81 decades ago, and it hasn’t been seen since. Hmmm, recurring theme with Gary’s gold and brown Machos! It was in excellent condition when he sold it, hopefully it remained that way, apparently Glen D. has a number of 1979 Machos, and this is one of them. Fortunately, I was able to reach out to Glen, and had a great conversation about the state of the car! He was very happy to see Gary’s old Polaroids! Glen detailed that it’s still got the original matching L80 403 Oldsmobile / TH350 3-speed automatic, but with an aluminium Edlebrock intake and a Holley, but has plans to put the standard equipment back on. It’s current in pieces, but he had the body fully restored, and it’s currently a roller. His friends got it into a local body tech school, who fully restored a lot of the panels using a clean 1980 Californian T/A as a sheet metal donor. The fenders and one of the doors have been changed, and it also has a 160MPH speedo. Glen had bought it off a guy who was moving from Port St. Lucie, Florida to Charlotte, NC. The seller had listed it on Craigslist in both towns at the time, but Glen was able to jump on it. The seller had also mentioned, that he had gotten 1979 #81 off his brother who lived in Wyoming.

1979 Macho T/A #82

Owner: Joe C.

This one was seen recently at one of the T/A Nats, and seems to have survived in excellent condition. 1979 #80 is a Heritage Brown/Solar Gold on deluxe Camel Tan Hobnail cloth interior with the original L80 403 Oldsmobile/TH350 3-speed automatic driveline. Terry H had bought this car from the second owner of this Macho in the early 2000’s. It was in excellent original condition with 36,000 miles. He had spotted the car for sale on eBay and quickly jumped on it to secure a deal with the owner. He had it shipped over to him in Indiana, and had stated he planned on holding to 1979 #80 for a long time. It looks to be in identical condition to the photos from the early 2000’s noting the missing air cleaner intake duct. I managed to find the owner and get in contact with him! It turns own Joe C. is the owner of this Macho, and he had gotten a hold of it back in 2006 off Terry as a father-and-son project, which fortunately didn’t need much work. The car has survived in excellent condition, and Joe is making sure it’s getting plenty of time on the autocross track!

1979 Macho T/A #88

Owner: Glen D.

1979 #88 was in pretty rough condition when it was first spotted back in the early 2000’s. It had serious rust, a non-running non-numbers matching 403 Olds in the engine bay, rough interior, wrong door panels, mismatched wheels and interestingly, no Macho decals, but the DKM identification badges and numbers. It appeared on eBay again in Richmond, MI in 2013 and sold for $3,549. The seller on eBay had some more information on the history, where he mentioned that they had picked up this Macho back in 2005 from behind a repair shop in Arizona where it was dumped for many years out in the elements that ravaged the car. He was in Texas at the time, and while he owned the car, he had thrown out most of the interior, and original console badge was long gone. He confirmed it was not numbers matching, and that there was... no rust, which I'm not too sure about that when looking at the old photos. I’m not 100% sure, but I had seen that the person who currently owned 1979 #81 also owned this one, and turns out I was right! I had a great conversation with Glen who does indeed, also own 1979 #1 and #81. Now he just needs #18 to get all combinations of 1 and 8 covered! This one is indeed all in pieces, and is basically untouched as it was in the photos below from two decades ago. He binned the mis-matched wheels, and put on some nice original silver 15x8 WS6 wheels off a 1979 Nocturne Blue T/A. He also mentioned that it looks like this one had the remnants of a NOS set up still in the car! (Explains why the original engine is gone, it’s probably spread out all over a road in Arizona somewhere!) He’s still got this one on the backburner while #1 and #81 get closer to completion.

1979 Macho T/A #89

Owner: Juan Oritz

Juan had filled out the contact form and submitted an entry to the website back in 2022, we’ve tried following up but haven’t heard back. He mentioned he was the owner of “89 Super Macho TA S type”. I don’t know what a Super Macho S-Type is, but hopefully he will get back in touch with us soon so we can find out!

1979 Macho T/A #90

Owner: Randy J.

Randy has owned 1979 #90 for decades, and got it all the way back in 1981. The original owner of this Macho had apparently been rear-ended just two years after the car was new, bummer! (literally!) The owner was not going to fix the car, but luckily Randy swooped in and saved it before the owner decided to junk it. Randy has owned over 100 T/A’s, but this is his only Macho! He did get the Macho fixed up years ago, but he started a family and this one sat on the backburner for a full restoration. He’s now full steam ahead on a total resto, and it will hopefully be finished soon! This one looks like one of the Bob Benson Pontiac ones, and features a 403 Olds/automatic driveline and a Hooker roll bar too.

1979 Macho T/A #92

Owner: Atilla the Hun(garian)

1979 #92 apparently came up for sale a few decades back with around 30k original miles on the clock in highly original, untouched condition. Note the cool matching mud flaps to the Macho stripe! Rob Thomas apparently bought this one, and painted it black. Eventually, it looks like it made it’s way to Belgium alongside 1978 #102, where Jerome and his wife share these two Machos. Check out the day one photos back at the local Arizona high school when they were new! Now, it has since made it’s way over to Hungary where Atilla has his Macho proudly on display. Atilla has provided us with a detailed the history of this Macho, and explains that the original owner of this Macho took custody of the car in July of 1980. He had the car all the way up to 2007, where he then sold it to Rob Thomas, who had the car repainted black with around 39,000 miles on the odometer. In December 2019, Rob sold the car at Mecum Auctions, where Jerome must have bought it from, and where it then made it’s way to Belgium. Atilla then scored the car from the PTTM Dealership in the Netherlands in January 2023. Atilla spent plenty of time and manhours having the paint perfectly corrected, cleaning up the undercarriage, giving the original drivetrain a service, re-doing the wiring and insultation, as well as giving it a very thorough detailing, and the results speak for themselves. He is still currently enjoying his dream car, with it currently having just over 40,000 miles on the clock.

1979 Macho T/A #95

Owner: Vince G.

1979 #95 has hopped over the pond to the UK, where Vince G. currently takes great care of this Macho. Vince wrote in to send some great photos and mentions that he bought the car back in 2009, and has given us a fresh update with the build information and current photos. Back in 2009, 1979 Macho #95 was shipped to California from Santa Rosa, California. Vince bought the Macho from a private seller in Germany, where it had never been registered. He had it brought home to the UK, where it sat alongside his Can Am. Interestingly, the buildsheet shows this one is a WS7, it appears the rear disc brake shortages reached the Machos too! This potentially is one of the only WS7 Machos. This is another one of the Bob Benson Pontiac Machos, and it still retains all the original VJ9 Californian Emissions equipment. He has since added a Hurst Dual Gate Shifter, and this T/A remains in excellent original condition!

1979 Macho T/A #96

Owner: Rob Thomas

1979 #96 was another one of the Bob Benson Pontiac stock cars in Petaluma, California. Chris D. had bought this car a couple of decals back needed restoration with the original graphics and decals missing. He also mentioned that it came with 4.10 gears and a Hooker roll bar. This one started out as a Starlight Black / Mayan Red Macho with Recaro seats, but then also had the rest of the 1981 Y85 Recaro Pace Car interior added. This one still has the original L80 403 Oldsmobile V8/TH350 3-speed automatic driveline, and surprisingly, the VJ9 Californian emissions equipment as well.

1979 Macho T/A #97

Owner: Barry Johnson

1979 #97 is one of Barry’s, he has recently completed a restoration of the interior. Another Bob Benson car, this one has the original L80 403 Oldsmobile / TH350 3-speed automatic driveline. Featuring a unique silver and grey combo and blue interior, it has received a full restoration into original condition.

1979 Macho T/A #206

Owner: Tim L.

I bet you’re reading this thinking hang on a minute. They made 206 1979 Machos? What happened to 99 through 205? Well, there’s a unique case with this one. This seems to be the only factory special model Trans Am modified by DKM. This was already a very rare 1979 Y89 Tenth Anniversary Trans Am W72/4-speed car, which was then given the E-Type treatment by DKM, making it really a standout car. As for the number? Well apparently, the original customer who ordered this car really liked the number #206 and specially requested that number. They went a bit ballistic with this one, because on top of the exorbitantly high cost of a new Y89 Tenth Anniversary at the time (and a 4-speed one nonetheless), they also opted in for the E-Type upgrade! This Macho features a Hooker roll bar, Doug Nash 4+1, fibreglass lift off hood, early Ram Air heads, an aluminium Pontiac H.O. intake, as well as the other DKM modifications. The customer that ordered this car must have had money to spend! Tim picked up this one of the second owner with 16,000 original miles a few decades ago after it had spent a bit too much time in the Californian sun, and has given the E-Type a bit of a refresh with some new seat covers as well.
